Khotang

Khotang district lies in the eastern part of Nepal, and it borders Solukhumbu, Okhaldunga, and Bhojpur districts. This district is rich in natural beauty with terraced land, high hills, and green forests in abundance. It boasts rich biodiversity and is home to different species of flora and fauna.

Kirant Rais are the dominant inhabitants of this district. However, people of different ethnicities live here. Around 75 per cent of the population is engaged in farming. Potato, wheat, barley, rice, millet, and maize are the major crops of the district. Locals also raise livestock such as cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, and horses for household use. People following Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity live here in perfect harmony.

Halesi is the most popular tourist destination in the country. Situated at an altitude of 1,355 meters above sea level, Halesi lies 185 kilometers southeast of Mount Everest. The main shrine lies in a cave 67 feet below the surface and is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. The half-moon-shaped entrance faces the east, and the round cave spans about 193 feet in diameter. A separate cave lies beneath the main shelter. People believe the Halesi Cave has been inhabited for more than 6,000 years.

✅ According to legend, Lord Shiva hid in the Halesi cave, escaping the demon Bhasmasur who had received a boon to incinerate anyone he touched. Another major attraction in the district is Danda Kharka (2,500 meters), situated on the boundary of Khotang and Solukhumbu. This site offers spectacular views of Mount Everest (8,848 meters), Lhotse (8,516 meters), Cho Oyu (8,201 meters), and Mount Makalu (8,485 meters).

✅ In addition, one can enjoy the scenic beauty of smaller peaks like Mera Peak (6,476 meters), Numbur Himal (6,959 meters), and Kyasar (6,770 meters), as well as green hills such as Dharma Danda (4,446 meters), Ghyangkharka (3,612 meters), and Runa Danda (3,605 meters).

Conclusion

Salpa Pokhari (3,414 meters), located on the boundary of Solukhumbu, Khotang, and Bhojpur, is a popular pilgrimage site. Likewise, Panch Pokhari (4,200 meters), nestled on the lap of Mera Peak, is another important pilgrimage site for people in nearby districts. These lakes turn festive during Janai Purnima, attracting visitors from surrounding communities to witness the unique culture and tradition of the Rai, Tamang, and Sherpa people.

Khotang is blessed with natural beauty, diverse culture, rich traditions, and a simple rural lifestyle. It holds immense potential to attract tourists from across the globe. Trekkers can enjoy untouched wilderness as they pass through temples, monasteries, dense forests, rivers, and picturesque villages over a three-week trail. The trek begins with a flight to Lamidanda or a drive to Halesi from Kathmandu and ends at Phaplu airstrip—or it can continue along the classic Everest route via Jiri and Shivalaya.
